Q: What is your relationship to Twitter?:
None. We are merely users of the service like anyone else. We created Tweetmeetup because Twitter is where we found each other (and our followers) and we believe that the “loose and casual” connection between users reflects what we want to achieve with the site. It is very much a “meet and greet” type of gathering, just like tweeting is. It is a good way to find like minded people and we strive to keep it easily accessible for everyone. We have thought of integrating more with other services and will consider to do so if enough of our users feels that it is necessary.
Q: Do I have to be a Twitterer to attend?:
Not at all. Right now however our attendance process uses Twitter (this might change in the future) to make it easy for people to connect with each other. On the other hand, attending a TweetMeetup have become a compelling reason for many of our attendees to start tweeting and/or widen their existing network Tracking attendance have two purposes: a) to make sure that the venue is big enough to hold everyone who wants to come and b) so that attendees can see who else is going/or who you met while attending the meetup. Right now confirming attendance is not mandatory but HIGHLY recommended. At a later date we might organize special themed/event type meetups where we need to know the attendance in advance because it might be associated with a cost or prior investment by us. In those cases it will be clearly stated in the meetup details and attendance is, as always 100% voluntary. It is just a tool to make us and other meetup organizers able to arrange a meetup that is something over the ordinary.
Q: How do you make money from TweetMeetup?:
The simple answer: we do not. TweetMeetup is a non-profit organization. Our hosting is cheap and paid for by the people on the “About us” page. Attendance to our meetups is also free and we like to keep it that way. Organizers are allowed to charge for their meetups but if doing so it should be clearly stated in the meetup details and we encourage all collected money generated from meetups either to: a) cover the costs of the meetup (as in venue costs, free drinks or similar, NOT payment for time spent organizing) or b) to directly benefit the attendees in some way. The same goes for sponsors. We highly encourage sponsoring, but we would like that you make the sponsoring deal benefit the attendees as mentioned earlier. We are confident that you will, as we have, notice that just by having a large turn up and a successful meetup you will be greatly repaid in the form of new contacts, shared ideas, business deals and information. In the long run that is what is the biggest added value, the whole point in having big meetups and that is why we gladly provide this service 100% free of charge. Our real value lies in people.
Q: I saw you wearing a cool TweetMeetup T-shirt, how do I get one, do you sell those?:
Yes I did wear one, and thank you for noticing!
We don’t sell them directly, it was initially just created for the organizers for fun and to make it easier for the attendees to find us on the meetups. But since others want one too I have put the designs online for anyone that wants to order one (designs for both men and women available): http://tweetmeetup.spreadshirt.net
